When did schmoozing become so damned important?
Posted in Snigs BS on July 29, 2009 by snigsspotSeriously, when did it happen?
More importantly, why did it happen?
I remember a time when a verifiable resume and a good interview was all that was required. Now cover letters? Thank you notes?
Geee-zusss.
What a load of bullshit. All this sucking up, for what? You’re more likely to get hired for your schmooze than you are your abilities?
Don’t ask about salary during the first interview? And why not? Like I’d want to waste my time, or the perspective employer’s time if I know damned good and well the pay isn’t enough for me to take the job?
I’ve gone to two interviews over the course of my 24 working years that didn’t lead to me getting the jobs. The first one, the employer’s new daughter-in-law was hired- the reason I didn’t get that job is a no-brainer. The second was when I applied for a secretarial position at the Dept. of Corrections facility where the husband works. I was told by the personnel director that the only reason I didn’t get that job was that the girl who did get it was already an employee (an officer) who wanted a career change.
Would a cover letter or thank you note have changed the outcome in either situation? I think not.
I’ve been with the same employer the past 8 years. During those 8 years, I’ve been late to work twice and the time of both tardies added together is less than five minutes. I have done my job well, played nice with others as much as anyone could. This past year of classes, I’ve not been late the first time, have finished all assignments in a timely and orderly manner and have what should be considered a 5.0 GPA.
Does this not count for shit anymore?
Dear Lord, if I have to rely on my willingness to schmooze, I won’t make it.
